Winners of the Rapid Championship!

After 2 days full of special moments, great atmosphere and amazing chess the event has come to an end. During the closing ceremony, held in the impressive sporting arena Spodek, the new European Champion and European Women Champion in rapid were crowned.
First day of the European Rapid Championship!

Action-packed first day of the European Rapid Championship has come to an end. A lot has happened today – opening ceremony with distinguished guests, a side event for girls and of course many exciting chess battles!
All for chess & Chess for all – WOM event “Gwiazdka szachowa”

FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess, European Chess Union Commission for Women’s Chess & Organizing Committee of the European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2022 in Katowice organised the first “All for chess & Chess for all” WOM event “Gwiazdka szachowa”.
The European Rapid Championship has started!

After a full day of blitz yesterday, it is time for the slightly slower, yet still extremely exciting – rapid chess! 910 players from 37 countries met in one of the biggest sporting arenas in Poland – Spodek – for a two-day European Rapid Championship.

The European Chess Championship in blitz was held on 16th December in a truly exquisite location – Spodek Arena – one of the largest indoor venues in Poland! A whopping 830 players from 38 countries were fighting for the title of European Champion, making it one of the biggest chess events in the world!
European Championship in blitz has kicked off in Katowice!

829 chess-players from all over Europe are fighting for the titles of European Champion in open section and among ladies!
We are very grateful that many guests and partners have attended the opening ceremony. Vice President of ECU, Gunnar Bjornsson, and ECU Secretary General, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, were among them and welcomed all participants on behalf of the European Chess Union.
Secretary of the city Katowice, Maciej Stachura, was also present. We are really grateful for it, our tournament could never be organised on such a level without the support of the city Katowice.

We have a beautiful, snowy winter in Poland! Remember this and pack warm clothes. During the weekend, the temperature in Katowice will be around -10 degrees Celsius.

European chess champion from Sweden will come to Katowice

We present to you another strong grandmaster. Nils Grandelius (2652) is a European Chess Champion from Sweden. He also competed in the World and European Junior Championships Bronze medalist World Cup under 18. The youngest ever Swedish chess player with the title of GM.
